22 December 1944
Cover to India, cancelled in the New Hebs with PCH type 90, the inter-island cancel.
The US Air Mail stamp is cancelled too. It was possible to prepay US air rates if there was an US Air Mail service on the way and there was
no rule saying who was responsible for the cancelling. (Please see cover F.1.-30MR26). But I doubt that this service was available in India.
The date of the cancel is 22.DEC.(44), the month a bit misaligned upwards, year not legible but deducted from the arrival cancel which reads
BARAMATI 5 APRIL 45. Travel time does not support the idea of any Air Mail.
The addressee was B.V. Coventry in BARAMATI. Mr & Mrs. Coventry where South Australian missionaries of the Australian Church of Christ in a
Bhamptas mission in BARAMATI from 1943 on. The district should read correctly "Pune".
DHC/733 is an Indian censor mark. Exists as "tombstone" handstamp with a crown too. DH is the letter code for India in the censor mark and
C is the letter code for the censor station in Bombay. The C8 may have something to do with censoring too I think.
A contribution from an Australian collector - Thanks Ron!

The cover was not censored in the New Hebrides and has the Inter-Island cancel so it is most possible that it came from an outer Island by ship to
Sydney and WAS NOT SEALED. I conclude this by the position of the buff censor tape over the backflap - normally this would seal the side of the
letter opened by the censor. The diamond "2" censor cancel is of Sydney origin. It is interesting to see a similar cover in the menue G.1. under G.1.-44NO17
which dates 17 November 44 and is addressed to a person of the Church of Christ in Crows Nest, Sydney and which is likewise censored and cancelled.
