Here's what "DEG" writes about the "broken M" error: "These stamps were set in sheets of 30 (10 rows x 3 columns). Presumably 14 sheets were overprinted SPECIMEN to obtain the required UPU distribution quantity. It has been assumed that a different overprint plate would have been prepared for these double-width stamps, but on each of the 9 values the same "Broken M" variety can be found that has previously been at position 41 (R7/5).
One possible explanation is that the same overprint plate was applied using only columns 1, 3 and 5. If so, 14 of each value with this variety could be expected to exist." "DEG"'s stamps do not show any signs of albino prints from uninked columns 4 or 6.
