Letter from the Condominium Postmaster to Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. The 1910
10c and 1F stamps cancelled with PCH type 5. Here we have the same phenomenon that
there are stamps on the cover which to our knowledge had not been in Vila at this time.

The 5c, 10c and 1fr. of the 1910 French set
on a letter to Switzerland. Maybe the stamps had an earlier first day of issue than given in
Hals / Collas. The stamps are cancelled with PCH type 5. (Merot coll.)

2 September 1910
The 5c, 10c and 1fr. of the 1910 French set

We are confronted with a special problem here: the stamps were on sale at Vila from
11 September 1910 according to Hals/Collas. So one could think that this date can only be wrong considering
the date on the cover. But they were on sale in Paris since 16 March 1910 at the
"Agence Comptable des Timbres-Poste Coloniaux".
It may be that this letter was written by the addressee himself and he affixed the stamps too and sent the letter to Vila. So on the letter the postmaster in Vila saw correct stamps which he had not for sale himself.

Mixed frankings : ½d 1908 British and 10c 1910 French issue on a postcard from Vila
to St Gallen Suisse as a correct 15c. postcard rate to Switzerland, cancelled with a nice
impression of PCH type 7 in blue. The card most likely has been carried to Sydney by the
Messageries Maritimes steamer Pacifique, which arrived at Sydney on Oct 30.
August Ess was one of the settlers Burns Philp placed on their territory in Santo
in 1902. In a source of 1918, he is mentioned as copra maker on Tongoa. See postcard in "1911/12" "Used in 1916". ("SeSi" collection)

9 November 1910
Scarce local letter from Vila to Tanna. See included letter at left. The writer had been scared out of Tanna because of some incidents between the French recruiting ships
St. Michel (Comptoirs Français des Nouvelles Hébrides, Nouméa) and Tam-Tam with the Tannaese but was brought back and reinstated later by the French cruiser Kersaint. No information found about the addressee so far.
Burns Philp & Co. Ltd. steamer MALAITA left Sydney on October 1, calling at Lord Howe Island on the 4th, Norfolk Island on the 7th and arrived at Vila on the 11th.
She left Vila for the southern end of the group on 12th, arriving back on the 15th, leaving for the north on the 18th and came back to Vily on
November 7. She departed on 11th and called at Erromanga and Tanna despatching this letter there. She returned to Sydney on 21 November.
The sender may have been a Chiérésin, who in May 1897 was stewart on the French ship St. Antoine from Noumea to Sydeny. (Treadwell coll.)
