A.S. MOTAU
"Motau" was a wooden 253 tons
auxiliary schooner which was owned by BP & Co from 1917 to 1922 and then by
BP South Sea Ltd until 1930, operated mainly around the Fijis and became
a total loss in Nabouwalu. Refloated and operated from 1932 to 1940 as "Lei Vita" by an owner in Suva.

The French 20c single stamp is cancelled with a 1923(?) Port Vila cancel and
additionally with a straightline A.S. MOTAU strike. "Motau" was a wooden 253 tons

These four stamps ("JGI" coll.) all have two strikes of the MOTAU cachet. 20c
was the overseas rate (France and UK) in the early 20s.

Shipmail from Port Vila? In most cases it is the other way round: this time a
New Caledonian stamp is cancelled in Port Vila with PCH Type 9.(Treadwell coll.)

Loose Ship Letter
The French 50c single stamp is cancelled with a previously unrecorded strike of the straightline
S.S. MAKATEA (double-underlined)."Shipletters of the South Pacific" by J Whitsed Dovey
mentions two other varieties, but not this one. The Makatea was a twin screw steamer owned
by Burns Philp. She was 814 tons, built in 1907. She was acquired by BP in 1925 for L9500
to replace the aging Motau, but served in the NH for only a year before being transferred to Fiji,
where she was written off and sunk in 1931. There's no other strike on an NH stamp recorded
until now, maybe not surprising given it was only there for a year or so. (Treadwell coll.)
