ring cancel. (Klinger coll.)
16 January 1929
Similar letter written by the former Vila postmaster Roy to
Richard Bernier at Doumbéa., franked with a 50c "Chiffre Taxe" and 2d & 10d "Postage Due" stamps
"cancelled" by a triangle Tax cachet with adjacent Dumbea Nouvelle Calédonie double
ring cancel. Richard Bernier's father was a settler at Canala (New Caledonia) in the 1880s where 1909/10 Vila postmaster Roy, who wrote this letter,
was postmaster in about 1903. Richard had been at Port Vila from 1907 until 1910 as a geometer and married there Louise Roy,
who might have been a daughter of Postmaster Roy (supposedly not his wife or mother). So they knew each other and I think that Mr. Roy went
back to New Caledonia after his time as postmaster at Port Vila and seeing that both letters have the Dumbea cancel I would think
that Mr. Roy still had these New Hebrides Tax stamps and used them at the Dumbea post office. ("SeSi" coll.)
